(Visual representations you can't understand are useless. While new players may like the ASCII of the default game (especially those used to old-school rogue-likes), I do definitely recommend a tileset for ease of play. I've put about 20 hours in so far and it's still a blast. I'd suggest reading some "getting started" guides on the Dwarf Fortress Wiki. Unfortunately due to its depth, DF has quite a high learning curve.
